Water Stress Induces the Up-regulation of a Specific Set of Genes in Plants: Aldehyde Dehydrogenases as an Example
نویسندگان
چکیده
The deleterious effect of osmotic stress is often caused by the accumulation of reactive molecules e.g. aldehydes. These molecules can cause lipid peroxidation and modifications of proteins and nucleic acids. Aldehydes can be converted to non-toxic carboxylic acids by different aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDH). ALDHs occur in all organisms implicating their importance in general biological functions. Aldehydes do not only represent toxic molecules but they are also intermediate products in the synthesis of osmolytes which have been shown to be protective molecules in osmotic stress. For this reason a careful balance of aldehydes is required. Evidence emerges that ALDH enzymes are involved in maintaining this balance, and the investigation of the physiological role of plant-ALDHs begins to attract attention. This review tries to summarize the current knowledge of stressregulated ALDHs in plants. It describes how ALDHs can be used to obtain more stress tolerant plants by overexpressing ALDH genes. ALDH genes have been used in two ways: 1. to obtain increased accumulation of osmolytes e.g. glycine betaine, 2. to detoxify aldehydes.

Up-regulation of plasma membrane H+-ATPase under salt stress may enable Aeluropus littoralis to cope with stress
Plasma membrane H+-ATPase is a major integral membrane protein with a role in various physiological processes including abiotic stress response. To study the effect of NaCl on the expression pattern of a gene encoding the plasma membrane H+-ATPase, an experiment was carried out in a completely random design with three replications. A pair of specific primers was designed based on the sequence o...
متن کاملEpigallocatechin-3-Gallate Induces Apoptosis through Up-regulation of Bax and Down-regulation of Bcl-2 in Prostate Cancer Cell Line
Background and Aims: Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is a polyphenolic compound from green tea, which its anticancer effects on many types of cancers have been confirmed, but the molecular mechanism by which EGCG induces apoptosis remains unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate anti-proliferative properties and apoptotic signaling pathway of EGCG on PC3 human prostate cancer ...
متن کاملGenome-wide characterization and expression analysis of the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) gene superfamily under abiotic stresses in cotton.
In plants, aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) function as 'aldehyde scavengers' by removing reactive aldehydes and thus play important roles in stress responses. To date, 30 ALDHs have been identified in Gossypium raimondii, whereas ALDHs have not been studied in Gossypium arboreum or in tetraploid cotton. In this study, we identified 30, 59 and 59 aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) genes from G. arbor...
